Black border on LCD screen, Slackware 9

Hi everyone. I'm completely new to Linux as of a couple days ago. I've searched the forums every way I know how and have tried many of the suggestions, but to no avail. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-R505JS but I don't have the manual with me, so I don't know the exact specs other than what I can find on Google and for the monitor, that's not much. I'm running Slackware 9.0.0 and I'm using KDE. My goal is to have 1024x768 resolution display fill my screen. There is currently about a 1" black border around my display. I've changed all the resolutions in XConfig, but I have no idea what to try with the Monitor. I cannot select anything under the LCD model and under the Sony model there is a huge list of items I'm not familiar with. As is always recommended here, I'm pasting the monitor portion of my XConfig file. I would very much appreciate any hints. Thank you all.

If you havn't already and have HOWTOs installed, check out '/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/Laptop-HOWTO'

I believe it addressed that.

Thanks for the pointer. I didn't see the answer, but maybe I just missed it. But it did give some websites as resources and I'll check those out and report back here.

As I'm sure you know, if this were a desktop monitor, you would be able to expand the image to fit the screen by using the buttons on the front of the monitor. If there is an equivalent function with a Vaio, that's the first thing I'd try. If there is no such equivalent, then I'd suggest trying a higher resolution (ie, 1152x864 or 1280x1024) and see if that creates an image that fills the screen. -- J.W.

That was worth a shot. It didn't work, but I did notice that if the color depth is 24 the display gets even smaller! I guess that's why I have it at 16 currently. (It doesn't get smaller at 8.) I think I also forgot to mention that even my initial text console has the black border, it's not just in x. I heard that it might be a setting in Liilo (I also have Win98 on here) but I know nothing about Lilo. I did read the laptop howto and tried to go to the links provided in there, but they were all down or obsolete. One of the most annoying things about it all being shrunk like this is that the fonts look all goofy in Mozilla. They're fine in native KDE apps.

I had the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 8200. When I start up xfree86 if i push the Function key+F7 it will put it in full screen. See if Fn+F7 will work for you.

Thanks! It was worth a try, but it didn't work for me. More ideas are appreciated.

Found these specs for that sony model on NETBSD install XF86Config-4 Monitor HorizSync 31-48.5 VertRefresh 40-70 Option "dpms" Then under XF86 Section "Device" Option "DRI" Option "NoDDC" Driver "i810" BusID "PCI:0:2:0" VideoRam 4096 Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 16 Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768"

lspci should confirm video chip uses i810 driver. Hope those Horiz + Vert rates work out. I wonder what SW9 xorgsetup would setup?
Good luck.
