kernel hangs during boot - no error messages

Hi all,

I am currently working on FC6 with a 2.6.19.6. I don't seem to be getting errors from the initrd process but the system just hangs right before the init gets called. Here is my output:

Scanning logical volumes
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "VolGroup00" using metadata type lvm2
Activating logical volumes
2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active
Trying to resume from /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01
No suspend signature on swap, not resuming.
Creating root device.
Mounting root filesystem.
kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
Setting up other filesystems.
Setting up new root fs
no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults
Switching to new root and running init.
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys

This is where it hangs...normally I believe the output that would follow this is "INIT ...some version" and then some selinux output followed by all the lines with the [ OK ].

So I read somewhere that you could put "init=/bin/sh" in the grub entry so I put this on the same line as root=blah thinking that when it gets to the point where the init function gets called it was call /bin/sh in place of the normal init function. If this is the case I should get a shell prompt but the boot process seems to hang before that point because I do not get a shell.

I am not sure where to start debugging (google hasn't produced much yet) since there are no error messages to indicate a starting point.

Any suggestion/help/links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi.

You could try and boot up a live CD, mount to local disk (at least /boot and the root file system), then chroot youself into the OS installed on the local disk. This way you can run some checks to verify that /bin/sh is not damaged, and other checks you see fit.

Regards,
