x + voodoo 3 = fatal io error 104

hi all,

ive been using damn small linux on a (very) old laptop just fine in full color etc, but when it comes to running it on my main pc, it won't do anything unless i run it in 256 colors. even then, i can only start x with the xfbdev server that comes with dsl. any other configuration or x server that i try (including xfree86, which i have seen recommended for 3dfx cards) just results in the same old fatal io error 104 (connection reset by peer) error message, accompanied by (i think) no screens found.

am i right in thinking that this is something to do with a graphics driver, specifically the tdfx driver? if so, is there a way of using a different driver at boot and if so, any recommendations as to which one?

any suggestions are very welcome,

thanx in advance,

grooveharder
