hey people.......i'm not really worrying about the modem as yet.....i can still surf the net on xp....but i know that the motorla sm56 is a winmodem.....but i downloaded the driver for it but i am not sure how to install it......on the drivers site it says i need a kernel of at least 2.4 so that must be why.,....i'm using rh 6.2 with kernel 2.2 something......anyway the soundcard may be easier to fix......when i boot up or do sndconfig it finds it as a via 82cxxx or something along the lines of that, when it plays a sample sound file i don't hear anything.....nothing is wrong with my sound card or speakers because im listening to music now......is it because i have an older kernel???.....or is my sound card just not supported?
Modem, if indeed its the same as the one motorola has drivers for, then no they won't compile for a 2.2.x kernel if they claim they'll compile for a 2.4.x. There was a mig change in how things worked between those kernel versions.
The sound card should use the via82cxxx_audio.o module. I've got one that has that, works fine. What happens when you:
modprobe via82cxxx_audio
and then try to play something?
Another thing, your profile says mandy 8.2 and in your post your running RH 6.2; any reason for running the 2 year old distro? Ancient hardware?
i changed...lol.....nah everything is good now, just i trying to get this darn Winmodem working...i using an external 33.6 now that i found in my room....just not cutting it......i searching around for another driver someone is secretly developing....
