USB headset

I just got a USB headset, and it's working great aside from one small detail. The volume control on it does not work. It's not that it's broken or anything, the first time I plugged it in, the volume control on it worked, it just didn't play sound in my head phones (I had to reboot my computer so the drivers could load). Now sound works great and I can use it to play sound from one program while my other programs use my speakers, but I cannot adjust the volume remotely. It even went as far as breaking my ability to use it on my keyboard (which uses the same bindings, so it's like I am pushing the same buttons either way). I don't quite get it, the buttons respond when I push them to set the bindings, but that's it. Any ideas?

EDIT: Also, evidently my sound sounds like shit with my mic.
