The situation was similar for me when I set up Ubuntu 9.04 recently; I have a Flatron L1953T and it was listed as unknown, resolution was a meagre 800x600 or so. But that went away when I installed the proprietary nvidia drivers, so if that's a viable solution for you, you can try the ati radeon drivers. Now with the nvidia drivers in place the settings tool your screenshot shows does not work on my system anymore, when I call it up it asks me whether I would like to use the nvidia tool instead.
Not all models of monitors and/or manufacturers will be present in your distro's list. However, as long as you specify the appropriate horizontal and vertical refresh rates in your xorg.conf file (which should be in the /etc/X11 directory) you should get good performance from them.
For the Flatron, from what I could find, the specs are:
Synchronization Range - Vertical 56 - 75 Hz
Synchronization Range - Horizontal 30 - 83 kHz
