Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Unable to install BroadcomNetxtremeGigabit card

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and more or less new to linux too.
Tried it some 15 years ago but due to lack of time dropped it.

I installed Slackware 10.2 on a HP XW4300 dual boot workstation.

It installed fine, however I'm unable to make my network card work.

It's a BroadcomNetXtremeGigabit for HP.

As far as I understand it I should uncomment the correct driver in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

I suppose, but not sure, this driver ought to be tg3.
However there is no trace of it in this file.
Also I never got the option during install to automatically detect the card.

OK, I got a bit further, i downloaded the driver from the Broadcom site, i succceeded in building the driver from the TAR file.
However I get the error " ìf-mii.h' previously defined here.

Any suggestions?

Roger

I've just been through a similar problem with FreeBSD, but I think there are some similarities so I hope this helps

this suggests that you are installing the miibus module(?) twice. Its either double up in your kernel config or is in your loader.conf file as well as in the kernel (if you have a loader.conf in linux)

as for the card driver, try some of the more common modules. I could only get a SMC card working using an IBM/DEC (dc) driver in my server, even though logic (and card spec) suggested I should be using rl

good luck
