Wireless card is unable to see network

I recently purchased a DWL-650+ PCMCIA card and a DL-614+ Router both by D-Link. I have the PCMCIA card up, I think, thr link light is on and with a static IP address I am able to ping the card from the laptop. However I am not able to see the router or other computers on that switch. If I remove the wireless card and plug in a wired card every thing is recognized automatically. The wire less card is installed as eth1 even tho there are no other NICs installed when it is. The ifcfg-eth1 lookes like this

DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.0.137
NETWORK=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
WIRELESS=yes
WIRELESS_MODE=2
WIRELESS_ESSID=myessid
WIRELESS_CHANNEL=6
WIRELESS_RATE=5

I am using Mandrake 9.1.

I can not see the network from this card Please help.
