Start the Synaptic Package Manager (faster and more efficient than Ubuntu One) and search for "foomatic."
If they aren't present, install hpijs, the foomatic-db-engine, and the foomatic-compressed-ppds and see if they help.
I have an HP Officejet Pro L7680 that works great and those are on my system.
There's some other foomatic stuff that the search turns up. If the above suggestion doesn't work, try installing the other items one at a time until you find the one that does the trick.
