Problems installing the Ubuntu Netbook Remix package over Ubuntu 8.10

I installed UNR using a bootable USB key on my Samsung NC10 netbook. The layout of UNR is great but after playing around with UNR for a day, I uninstalled it because the program kept freezing up on me.

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 onto my Samsung NC10 netbook. It works great but I still want the UNR layout. I am following the directions found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR and installing the UNR package over Ubuntu 8.10 hoping I won't have the same freezing issues.

I am having problems with these two sections:

Notes:

* Neither the netbook-launcher or maximus automatically start, you will need to add them to your session through gnome-session-properties

I think I figured this out doing some searches. I opened up System > Preferences > Sessions and added Maximus and Netbook-Launcher.

Is this the correct way to add these programs to gnome-session-properties?

I also do not know how to accomplish this:

As there isn't a configuration package available yet, you will need to setup the gnome-panel to mimic the standard UNR set-up. The applet order is as follows:

go-home-applet | window-picker-applet | notifcation-area-applet | mixer-applet | clock

Thank you in advance for the help.

Well, the first step looks correct to me - does it work?

The second step's really only cosmetics... You still see the Ubuntu menu, which is sort of doubling functionality if you've got the UNR launchers. My tip: Use a screenshot of UNR on any of the dedicated distributions' websites and hand-craft the top panel accordingly. Mostly, those distributions don't use a second panel to save screen estate - again, the screenshot will show you how it's done. Everything else is right-clicking and adding/removing what's needed.

M.

The first step did work... as in it did load netbook-launcher and maximus. The only problem is anytime I try and open a program such as Firefox, netbook-launcher and maximus fight Firefox to be the top layer and I have to Alt+Tab to see the Firefox screen. The top menu becomes invisible and I have to run the mouse over the icons for them to appear. I thought configuring the gnome-panel would fix the programs battling out over screen supremacy, but now that you explained what that means, I realize it will not.

Thank you for explaining the gnome-panel configuration. I now know what that means and do not feel like such a newb.
