Question Suse 9.0 and updated kernel for AMD processors...

I have an Asus A7N8X mobo.

I installed suse 9.0 pro without any problems. I successfully installed nvidia's nforce rpm from their site to enable internet access. During an online update, one of the selections is called an "updated kernel optimized for AMD systems". Before it applies this particular patch, it informs me that I will have to recompile the kernel in order to use my onboard lan. I install the patch after reading up on the nforce threads here and feel pretty confident. All hell breaks loose. Linux starts up in text mode now (maybe due to an ATI driver rpm I tried with my radeon 9500 pro earlier?). I try the startx command but it will not work. Here are my questions...

1. When in konsole, I try the command "telinit 3" to enter text mode but it just won't work.

2. I also try the command "root", but that will not work either. How can I access root from konsole?

I ask these questions because whenever I try some commands I've seen on forums, I get a permission denied message.

If you want to go to text mode, you first need to press Ctrl+Alt+F1

Then u write telinit 3, after login in again

to get root permissions in a konsole you need to write "su"
and then your password!

The defualt setup for SuSE 9 leaves a lot of commands in the hands of the super-user "root." root is not a command but a user you need to login as. During the setup you should have been prompted to create a password for this user. When in konsole or Xterm or whatever shell you may be running, you can do this to become root:

su root #this is switch user to root
password: ****** #then enter your password that you specified for the root account

Definetely! There are issues with the driver intstall for the radeon series. Please see my post here

One more thing that I highly recommend. Uninstall the Nvidia rpm that you installed previously and install the radeon drivers first as per my directions in the linked post. Then when you have that working install the NVidia rpm as per NVidia's directions for an alternative SuSE installation that requires a kernel recompile. See NVidia's README
Good luck!
