Linux and AMD processors

I'm new to Linux, and am about to install on an AMD 1800+ Athlon on a MSI KT4A-V mobo, plenty of RAM. Are there any problems or issues when installing or using Linux on AMD chips and compatible chipsets? I had been fooling around with Knoppix on a P3 machine as well as my AMD machines and I got some inconsistent performance. Maybe a fluke but just wanted to ask.

My mandrake system is an Athlon 1800 on an Asus mobo. No issues here.

I have only ever used Linux on AMD based machines and never had any problems.

My 2 cents - I'm running an Athlon 2500+ and have not encountered any issues whatsoever. I'd recommend AMD without hesitation -- J.W.

Is anyone using amd sepmron processors. I am building a new PC and I am thinking of getting a sempron 2800 or a budget athlon 64. Which do you think would be the better but cost effective option.

cost effective is the 32 bit sempron.get it up and running then upgrade the processor at a later date.

I was thinking along similar lines. I think I will just buy the sempron 2800.

I have AMD XP 2800+. I am wondering if I have to install "For x86-compatible (32-bit)" or "For x86_64 (64-bit AMD64, EM64T)". I would appreciate if any one could help me int this.

even i have experienced consistent powerful performance of linux on my athlon 2600+ . There are no erratic crashes and the system appears to be fully utilising the cpu power

it is a very good idea to upgrade from athlon to athlon64 . prefer socket 939 against 754 as the former is going to stay longer in market.
