I just went through all the questions in alsaconf and only KDE system sounds worked. Ok, so I go to Settings -> Configure amarok, Engine, it only has KDEMM engine or no engine on the drop down menu. Does that mean that I have to setup the system default in the control center?
KDEMM, that's a new one-sorry, i haven't had experience with suse 10.0. From what i've read KDEMM seems to be a multimedia api/frontend for arts(and possibly some other backends). So KDEMM as the engine shouldn't cause trouble with audio-though that depends on the configuration of KDEMM, i suppose The other engines for amarok you need to download and install with yast(or download them from the web). You might want to try a few of those, and use the one that works best for you.
Originally posted by Habu Oops, seems like alsaplayer is a standalone package-sorry, my mistake. AD1885 is the chip on your card. My integrated intel card has AD1981B...one thing i forgot to mention.have you tried alsaconf? you run it from the command line as root.
I just ran alsaconf. On a Dell Dimension 4300 with an AD1885, it works like a charm!
Thanks a lot! Just spent 4 hours trying to figure that thing out
OK, so it's still not working. I wish I had as much luck as skidooman over here (nice job by the way), but I'm going to explode soon . Anyway. I'm not to sure how to configure KDEMM, so if you could help, that would be great. Thanks so much for getting me this far atleast.
Sorry, i really have no idea at all how to go about messing with kdemm. What i'd do is:
1. Sound appears to be working, except that there doesn't seem to be a way to convice the music players to output to the right place. In amarok's case, the kdemm engine might just be broken. I'd confirm this by using an app that a) either goes directly through alsa, or b) has no problems interfacing with kdemm. For a), try to get alsaplayer - there might not be an rpm for suse 10.0, but the one for suse 9.3 should work fine. XMMS should also be able to go through alsa, edit the mp3 plugin configuration to achieve this. For b) try another kde app, like perhaps kaffeine. But on my machine (9.3), i had to install a plugin for arts to let it play mp3s. With kdemm i don't know if this is neccessary.
2. If all that didn't work, we need to find out what exactly is the problem. The console would be much more help here. I'd try the mpg321 audio player, it offers options to choose the output device as well as device type(arts, alsa, oss, etc). I'd try that with the alsa output, in verbose mode. If it doesn't work it'll at least give a clue as to what might be going wrong. An alternative to mpg321 is mplayer, but that's a little harder to configure.
Btw, some of the apps i mentioned might not be available for suse 10 in rpm format, you'll either have to compile yourself or use the 9.3 rpms, which should be all right unless there's some dep problems.
