SoundCard issue?

Ok this is whats happening I'm playing my mp3 and ogg files with xmms and it has an awful sound quality I know its not that my sound card or speakers are trash cause I have wonderful audio quality in windows. My distro is red Hat 9 my sound carsd is the one that comes integrated in my amd mnotherboard which I think is ac' 97. Any idea of what should I do??? and if I have to configure the sound card how do I do that.
-Thanks

Im not sure in red hat, but mandrake and suse have a equalizer to adjust quality. I had the same question a year ago on my audigy2. Fixed it perfectly. Also, keep your main vol set to 80% and no higher, as different distros seem to distort above those levels.
