multiplex(channel?) soundcard issue

i was hoping to get a simple and direct answer to this since i am not very familiar with the sound system on gnu/linux systems yet. i will try to make this question also simple and to the point...

i have compiled, in my kernel, the proper sound card drivers and they seem to work fine. my issue is that, when i try to get sound from 2 different programs (let's say, xmms and gaim) at the same time, one of the programs seems to take priority and nothing comes from the other. is there a way i can 'add' a channel so that i hear both programs making their intended sounds?

that was as short as i could make... sorry. *shrug*

happy holidays - peace
