We really need to know the sound card model to help you with that. If you get it installed and you still don't have sound, you might wanna try the mixer itself. Most default to mute.

I have had a little trouble getting ALSA to run smoothly. When I finally got it to a point that it would work, amixer said something like "Cannot open mixer device". I had to use setmixer to get it to work.

What would help us is your model of card and an output of lsmod.

I could still use the output from lsmod.

What mixer program are you using?
