Hey, I'm currently using Kubuntu and I'm not getting ANY sound (no music, no sound from videos, and no system sounds).
This is what I get when I type in "lspci" in the console:

I've got a Dell Dimension 4600, so I think I have an Intel 658G motherboard, although I'm not sure where I can see this for sure.
I've already unmuted everything, so it's not that. This is really annoying; I've searched all over the internet, and still haven't found a solution to my problem
Your modules look correct. What happens if you issue
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
in a terminal. Be ready to hit Ctrl+C to stop it, as this
will send random sound to your speakers. Very nasty
noise, but you will know if your hardware works.
Are you using the KDE desktop environment? If so,
press Atl+F2 and then enter kcontrol and in there
select > Sound and Multimedia > Sound System.
Then you should have a check mark in "Enable the
sound system" under General and under Hardware
you should have Autodetect.
I've tried to setup KDE on a couple of my boxen, and
on other's comps, but have had sound problems. I
run Fluxbox and don't have these issues with it.
Following this thread, as I have a similar problem. When I try to make any change in KDE Sound System, it hangs:
Error =
Window with title "Sound System - Control Center" is not responding. This window belongs to application kcontrol (PID=5889, hostname=[ ]).
Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this application will be lost.)
Also, # cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp doesn't ever even finish in my console. The cursor sits there frozen until I kill the window.
# lspci

Yes, I've noticed no sound modules loaded. How do I solve it?
Please, SiriusAB and gustaveiras ... do not hijack this member's thread
with your own problems. Just follow it, or start a new one for your own
problem.
Raiwan,
If "When I type in "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp", nothing happens;
no sound comes out of my speakers" -- then you might have a hardware
problem.
I believe you can find the answer if you search Google <Linux> diligently,
and probably even searching LinuxQuestions.
I've installed the Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger and I went on this forum because I had
the same problems with the sound card. My sound card is Intel ICH5 and it is integrated
on the motherboard (My motherboard is an Asus P4P800-X)
I tried to editing modprobe.conf, reinstalling alsa driver, ... but I get still no sound.
Today I read the manual of my motherboard and I discovered that the motherboard
has two audio output, one is on the rear side of the case and one is located on
the motherboard.
On my motherboard there are 9 pin (10-1) nearly the rear mic-linein-lineout
jack connector and they are called on the manual "10-1 pin FP_AUDIO".
This second line out is used if you have a case with a front panel audio connectors
but this motherboard doesn't support two line out at the same time, so If you would
like to use the front panel audio connectors no sound can be produced by the
rear line out.
If you would like to activate the rear jack line out of the motherboard you have to
connect with jumper caps the LINE OUT_R (pin n'7 in the example below) with
BLINE_OUT_R (pin n'3 in the example below) and the LINE OUT_L (pin n'9 in the example below) with
BLINE_OUT_L (pin n'4 in the example below)
