sound and programs.....

can only one device access the sound card at the same time? when ever i try to run gaim and xmms, xmms will have control of the sound.... any way to fix this?

i am using slackware 9.1, w/ kernel 2.6.3, kde 3.2 (with sound turned off), with updated alsa modules....

yes i have sound with xmms but when more then one program tries to access the sound card like gaim or xmms i can only hear sound from one program at a time....
