I have a problem that is pretty annoying. I am using an Inspiron 700m with Debian. I keep everything up to date, in fact, I just finished a dist-upgrade this morning.
Anyway, when I run 'glxgears -printfps', I only get around 400 fps. I checked the X.Org log, and I saw this:
(II) I810(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 16192 kB
My video card, an Intel 855GM/E, has 64 MB, but X.Org is only using 16 MB.
I have tried the "VideoRAM" option in my xorg.conf, but this does nothing.
Your video card has no memory at all. It's an integrated intel card that uses system ram to give it video ram. The number should change to a higher amount or be settable in your bios for more video memory. 16, or 64, either way your glx frame rate is gonna suck. It is an intel card after all.
Thank you for your response. Yeah, I don't care for this video card. At least it can do some GLX, since my old laptop had no support for GLX.
I looked in the Xorg log, and found this:
(II) I810(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 16192 kB
and later...
(WW) I810(0): VideoRAM reduced to 57344 kByte (page aligned - was 60000)
(--) I810(0): Pre-allocated VideoRAM: 16252 kByte
(**) I810(0): VideoRAM: 57344 kByte
So it is trying to set the VideoRAM, but Xorg allocates the memory long before it gets to the VideoRAM section.
Since there is no option in my BIOS for changing this, I don't think that there is much else I can do. I guess I'll just have to stick with Windows for games.
