SB Live sound card detected, but does not play sounds

Howdy, Digiplaya here.

I have a Sound Blaster Live card in my computer, and for some reason my Redhat 9 Linux box detects it in the soundcard detection panel and it plays the test sound, but Linux does not load the sound server nor can it play any sounds from Linux.

Please reply if you know an answer to my problem.

Thanks!

Open up a mixer, kmix is a good one, then make sure your faders are set reasonably high, 80% plus. Save the settings, then try the sounds again.

I tried the mixer already but to no avail. I still cannot play sounds in most of my applications, except for GAIM and several others.

Please respond

I can play system sounds, but my CDs wont play loud.

you can hear a faint sound on the speakers, but no matter what volume control you turn up it doesnt get louder.

I tried to run Kmix but its not on

SB Live in Debian

I've got pretty much the same problem, I'm using a SB Live 5.1 player with alsa, emu10k is installed in a 2.6 kernel. I do get a noise from the speakers (you couldn't call it sound really, it's just a huge hiss with whatever is trying to play behind the hiss) is there anybody with a fix for this? I'm pretty much a newbie, but I've had a couple of guys who know their way around Debian try to fix it but with no success.

Any help would be much appreciated

I had the same problem for a long while till someone on this forum told me to check out the connection from my CD ROM drive to my motherboard.A wire should be coming out from the back of your cd-rom drive and attaching to your motherboard sound inlet slot.If it is not there please fix it.(From the outlet pin at the back of the cd drive to the motherboard). If this is not the problem and you are using xmms as your media player, try changing the audio plug ins for audio input and output in xmms.
It should work!

Not only increase the cdrom (sometimes you see no difference) volume also increase the GAIN, this is what will make a difference

I dont think the wire is much the case here, if he didnt have it plugged he would not get sound at all. There are command line options to increase the volume 's % I think it is the command mm... something related to xset check the --help option, that command is used to change X settings such as - DPMS to avoid the screen to black out after a while.
