I finally got an error message, while re-configuring the card:
in dutch:
De kernel module snd-emu10k1 voor geluidsondersteuning kon niet geladen worden. Dit kan veroorzaakt zijn door een foutieve module parameters, een ongeldige IO of verkeerde IRQ parameters

probably in english:
failed to load kernel modules snd-emu10k1. This can be caused by wrong module parameters, a wrong IO or wrong IRQ parameters.
(sorry about the bad translation)

you got the right junk in /etc/modprobe.conf ???
and soundcore enabled in your kernel config ??
Code:
alias char-major-14-* soundcore
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-midi
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
