safe operating temerature?

i am considering putting an old computer in my *uninsulated* attic to serve as a router for sharing a dialup network, the temperature there reaches below freezing during the winter, is this safe or will the computer die?

Heat is the enemy of computers, along with moisture, as long as you guard against condensation your attic should be fine.

Electronics do have both a lower and upper operating temperature limits. I have never bothered to see what the lower limit is for CPU's.

My guess would be like 0 Deg C.

What is your average low temperature?

Hmm, I'd keep it above zero C if I were you.

Copper wires et al have a positive temp coefficient for resistance, and sillicon chips a negative coefficient, so when it's cold it'll work more reliably and more stably.

But there IS a lower limit where some components (e.g. electrolytic capacitors) will start to feel uncomfortable.

Also check your hard drive specifications as these can be fussy about temperature, mechanical parts are sensitive due to thermal expansion/contraction, grease becoming too thick, etc....

Hmm, so long a you take it off during the summer!

Also, a PSU with a temperature-controlled fan should help to avoid sucking too much cold air through.

I'd use plastic insulation or at least rock wool since fibreglass can break up and get sucked in through air intakes, and it makes you go all itchy...
