critical temerature reached shutting down

I've got a new machine (P4 3.4 processor, 1gb ram, ati rx600 graphics, HP f1904 monitor)

Suse 9.2 installs to the point where the graphics card is being configured, then the screen goes blank and the machine has to be reset. Starts OK in failsafe mode. Installed the new ati drivers from the Suse site. Then starts OK in graphics mode but shuts down after a few minutes with the message "critical temperature reached 98 degrees C (!!!!) shutting down. I've got the BIOS set to shut the machine down if the CPU temperature exceeds 65 degrees C and probes on the grahics card, the ram, hard drive etc do not indicate that any part of the machine is overheating. It will sit all day in failsafe mode quite happily.

Any help would be appreciated.

David

Install with acpi and apm disabled (acpi=off apm=off on the kernel boot). This will allow the BIOS to control the fan(s). Upgrade to the latest maintenance after installation, and setup lmsensors and fan control (removing the acpi=off apm=off). This will put the fans under Linux control.
