Realtek RTL8110SC Onboard Ethernet

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new with Linux, well let me rephrase, I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux but I'm giving it a shot here.

I've got Fedora Core 5 installed and am trying to get the basics working like the Ethernet and audio. I have a ASUS P5VD2-X motherboard which has an onboard ethernet. Can someone help me get at least my internet working?

Thanks,
Jeff

Visit: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...word=RTL8110SC

Download the UNIX (Linux) driver "Linux driver for kernel 2.6.x (support x86 and x64)" by following the link: RTL8110SC(L) (Software)

Install both the kernel-devel and kernel-headers rpm packages:

yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers

Extract and build the downloaded driver(as root).

tar -vxjf r8169-6.001.00.tar.bz2
cd r8169-6.001.00
make clean module
make install
depmod -a
modprobe r8169

Review the extract readme file for additional help.

Ok I downloaded the GFS-kernheaders-2.6.15.1-5.FC5.17.i686.rpm and got that put on. Then got the kernel-devel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.i686.rpm and put that on as well.

Then tried to install the driver for the ethernet but as soon as I entered in a terminal the "tar -vxjf r8169-6.001.00.tar.bz2" I get an error saying:
tar: r8169.6.001.00.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.

So what went wrong? I was looking around and I'm thinking I might just try to jump up to FC6. Is it worth going to?

The tar command should work, it is taken directly from the readme file, quoting;

Quote:
<Quick install with proper kernel settings>

Unpack the tarball :
# tar vjxf r8169-6.aaa.bb.tar.bz2

Change to the directory:
# cd r8169-6.aaa.bb

If you are running the target kernel, then you should be able to do :

# make clean modules (as root or with sudo)
# make install
# depmod -a
# insmod ./src/r8169.ko
You can also try right-clicking on the file to extract from the desktop.

Does not matter to me, Fedora Core 6 or the newly released Fedora 7 has the driver built-in;

$ rpm -qlip kernel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6.i686.rpm | grep r8169
/lib/modules/2.6.20-1.2952.fc6/kernel/drivers/net/r8169.ko

Well, guess I'm not going to 6 or 7. I got through the whole install on 6 and it ends up rebooting but upon the reboot it goes to the undev process and then there is no more video signal being sent.

So then I tried going up to 7 being the newest. Well when I get just to the install I get a message that no driver was found. and it gives me a huge list of all these drivers for SATA drives which doesn't apply to me since I'm using a EIDE drive.

I guess I'll reload 5 and try again. Do you think there is another Linux distribution that is user-friendly and may work. I'm really just making this a summer project of mine to learn some of Linux and how it works. I do have a few weeks before my senior year starts...

Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/
Kubuntu: http://www.kubuntu.org/

They are the same except for the desktop, Kubuntu has the KDE desktop instead of the Gnome desktop in Ubuntu.
