Power management trouble on Intel i7 2670qm quad core

Hi everyone,

I'm having power management trouble with my new Asus laptop.
It has a quad core i7 2670qm CPU. ( Asus X53E Intel chipset with Intel graphics card)

In the last month I used it only on CentOS 6.2 and I noticed that the battery is getting discharged quiet quickly. I have not though it's bad or anything like that because this CPU is 45W instead of 35W like i5 or i3.

However I started the preinstalled Windows 7 on it(I know it's a shame ) and I notice that the power consumption half or even less under Windows.
Basically the Laptop can run on battery under Windows about twice as much than on CentOS or even more.

I have tried these kernels:
Quote:
2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64
Quote:
2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.x86_64
Quote:
2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64
I googled it a lot and I could not find any relevant information about this problem.

The cpuinfo says:
Quote:
cpu MHz : 800.000
On idle and 2.2GHZ when it's busy.
I have checked it on Windows too and the CPU runs 800MHZ when it is not busy and 2.2 when busy. The different what I noticed on Linux is the CPU heat. Even when the laptop is on idle and runs just on 800MHZ with out any loads it is still a bit hot. Not really but considerable more hotter than on Windows. When I was on Windows I couldn't even feel the CPU air flow at all and it was quiet cold.

So the question is that why the CPU is hotter under Linux even if it's on idle? I think it's kernel related because this CPU relatively new (September 2011 release date)

One more thing, the screen is about the same bright on Linux as on Windows so it is not related to that. As I said the CPU's air flow is hotter on Linux than on Windows so the culprit lies somewhere there.

Any idea would be helpful.

Thanks very much in advance!

Laz

I forgot to mention that the suspend does not work at all either. The laptop gets frozen with black screen and the CPU starts heating up quiet badly but no success to go to suspend mode at all. Have to force the shut down with the power button.
At the moment the screen saver and the hdd suspend are switched off too otherwise the system gets frozen and needs to be rebooted to get back on track. And of course I need to charge the buttery quiet frequently.

So,

I've got some good results with Fedora Linux.
I have tried out the Fedora live-cd and I had the same result as on Windows with-out any touch in Power-Management.
The CPU's air flow is cold as dead! Only concerns right now is the stability of Fedora.

Let's hope the kvm can run properly on it with the CentOS VMs and I'll use it.
The battery time is terrible at the moment on CentOS and I don't want to charge it every 1.5 hours.
