I have an HP 8510w that I got with the nVidia Quadro FX 570 chip. I'd very much like to run Linux on it, have tried SLED and openSUSE and while both install fine, I can't get the video to work to save my life.

It seems that no matter what I do to the display configuration when the OS loads X the video signal switches back to the notebook's display. If I attempt to use the Fn+f4 key combo to switch it back the external display, which admittedly doesn't support the same resolution as the notebook's display, it goes out of sync.

It seems like it should be possible to configure each display for the proper resolution and refresh rate (or both for the lowest common denominator)and ask SLED or openSUSE to switch between them (even if that is a manual process.)

Anyone have any suggestions?

Here you have nvidia's drivers download page. Select your card and system and it will automatically install it (well, once you've downloaded and executed it as root):
