nVidia Quadro 2 pro

2 days ago i tryed installing Red Hat 7.3 and the install went fine, then it rebooted an went through the process's, then it tryed to start X, no erorrs were flagged but the VDU switched off, sounded like it was tryin to turn that back on (its a AOC Spectrum 7Vlr), but never happened.

I gave up on RH and decieded to try out a SuSE 7.0 (i've had it lying around for ages).. Done the full instal, went fairly smooth (didnt ask what GFX card i had) an when it start up i was in like 640 x 480 res and the gfx were appaling.. everything very pixalated an jpg were badly displayed.
Looked for settings to change the GFX card driver but couldnt see them. Got the Linux drivers and tryed to install (kept getting conflict, forget the exact details). Read i had to update XFree86 for the drivers to work, so get latest and follow the install instructions to a T then try to start xf86cfg but it cant find it.. try to start X but it flags an error. Anyways.. I reinstalled and tryed a for varients but noting seemed to work. Now canni be arsed trying anything else (7 installs later).

So my real questions are.....

whats up with RH 7.3?

And how do i sort the GFX prob on SuSE 7.0?

thanks in advance

Col

The X server writes a log file which will have the exact error's,
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
The error messages will be near the end, post them here for us to look at.

With suse the problem is that the card probably doesn't get recognised ok.Then the autoconfigure thing gives you some crabby setup. To get it to work ok with Suse you need to get a xfree86 version that works with the card (try the suserpm's from their website) and the nvidia drivers and then tweak the xfconfig file. They might not work with 7.0 - Suse doesn't like upgrading for free too much.Another thing is the kernelversion. You probably better get some info wether your kernel from suse 7.0 has the correct drivers for that card.
RH? - no idea; 7.3 is the newest version.

yer i realise i'd be better with a more recent version of SuSE but i cant get hold of a copy or affoard to buy at the moment... Looks like i'll give suse a miss till a get a newer version. I did get the drivers from the nvidia site, kept flaggin an error (read up on it an it said i needed to install a newer version of xfree86).

What about this Red Hat problem.. you reckon its the monitor or the GFX card again?
