"NoAccel" option essential using ATI Rage 128 Pro card?

Following on from an earlier post (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi....php?t=547105).

I used X (XFree86) fine on my old Sarge system with kernel 2.6.8-3-powerpc and it worked fine on Etch with same kernel, but since I upgraded to 2.6.18-4, Xorg refuses to work without the NoAccel option enabled in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf. I have since upgraded to 2.6.21, but to the same problem.

If it's a case of the r128 driver not working right with the kernel I'm using, is there a patch or an alternate driver? I've tried the Vesa driver, but I get a "No screens found" error and fbdev doesn't do much at all.

I'm pretty clueless in this area so all help is appreciated!

Aha! I got Xorg working without NoAccel. BUT, I've reduced the colour depth down to 8. As you can imagine, this is quite annoying.

I wonder, is this a bug in DRI? If so, any patches/updates?

Thanks...
