no carrier


I have Fedora core four and 56 k external modem the modem squarks and is announced as ready in Gnome ppp
I hear it dialing but i get a no carrier signal It does the sameif i use wvdial. I have found a page of generic init strings on the internet but dont know how to enter them to try them am i on the right track?Thanks Jim

Been a long time since I used dialup, I believe "no carrier" is the last thing output by the modem when the connection is dropped. Its not an error, just an indication you were disconnected.
In your case it could be entering a bad ppp username/password and the other end hangs up your connection.

Honestly I don't know how to configure dialup on Linux, I work with modems from time to time but never or use on PPP connections.
My home ISP is big on Linux, and their help web page may help you get online with your ISP. I'm only assuming that's what you're trying to do. Here's their help URL.
