no audio cd playback on gentoo

i can mount cds, burn cds, rip cds. howerver, when i play an audio cd in xmms, workman, kcd, etc the progress bar moves yet i get nothing from the speakers. timer count and fast forward/reverse work, as well.
it is as if i didn't plug the direct audio cable from my cd-rom to the motherboard- only it is a LAPTOP!
i run gentoo on a sony vaio pcg-grx670 and kernel 2.6.5.

any ideas?

hi,

try playing your audio cds using xine, which reads the music digitally over the ide bus, thereby eliminating the need for a mobo patch cable..

no go. and it is pissing me off more and more each CD i have to rip to listen to! all i have is the process dialog/bar and countdown/up. no volume.
