audio playback

Hello,

I'm running SuSE Linux Personal 9.1 on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 notebook computer.

I have some mp3 files that I'd like to play. They open in the audio player that comes with SuSE 9 or KDE 3.2 (whatever's relevant), but it reports that there is no audio ouput setup or that its being used by another program (I don't think it is).

I fiddle around with the audio output in the preferences in that program, and for at least one of them, get a terrific crackling noise out of my speakers for music.

Any ideas on what do do here? Thanks.

It might be KDE's sound server 'arts' causing the problem.
You could try logging into Gnome desktop if you have it.
in a terminal try killall artsd then try launching your sound app

Thank you for the help, I can definitely play sound from multiple sources now.

However, the sound is INCREDIBLY noisy, scratchy, just not right. And its not the speakers or the hardware because they work fine on my Windows setup.

Any ideas anyone?
