I am having problems getting my modem working. Some background:
I am using kppp to interface with it.
It is a US Robotics 5610B hardware modem.
When I try to connect thru kppp, I get an initial "modem ready" message, and then I get "modem does not respond". I have been told that I need to create a symbolic link to the modem, but all attempts to do so haven't worked. Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?
I looking through other posts, and other sites, I found a solution that seems to at least get communications going to my modem.
I first typed cat /dev/proc/pci to get the information on my serial ports. I then took that information used the setserial command to point the device in the right direction. For me, it looked like this: "setserial /dev/ttyS4 irq 3 port 0x9800 autoconfig".
I then made a symbolic link in Midnight Commander from my modem to ttyS4.
I ran pppd and it looked like it was connecting. So then I edited my rc.local file to include the setserial command to set that up each time I boot.
I already had kppp set up to make the connection, and I tested that and everything seemed to be working fine until I tried to browse the internet. I opened up my browser (opera) and it gave me an error saying that it could not locate the remote server (I tried a bunch of them). I couldn't get anywhere. So I tried Mozilla. Same story. No email either.
Does anyone have a clue why I seem to be connected, but can't browse?
open kppp and click setup,then click edit on the account tab.
change the following settings to:
ip --> Dynamic IP address
gateway --> Default gateway
dns --> automatic
don't know if that IS your problem, but is was mine.
I am having the same problem with the same modem. However, I do not have setserial command on the computer I am using, and without the internet it will be difficult if possible to install.
Is there any way to manually set what setserial does?
