Modem Activation ppp0 error 8

I installed the software from linuxant for my Conextant HCF modem which I was told is a hardware modem (I'm still in doubt).
All went fine until I tried to activate it. It then came up with 'failed to activate ppp0 error code 8"
Any ideas? This is starting to become a nightmare.
I am using Redhat 9.

I forgot to add it's an internal PCI Modem

I have a problem with my dell notebook,,,

I've installed a new driver for my modem,,Installation went successfully,

BUT,,,When I try to ifup the device ppp0,,It says it can't control it,,

I tried:

/sbin/ifup ppp0

And when I go root it says,,failed to operate it because of error 2,
Or something similer!!!

Don't k'now what to do,,,

Please help,,
