Low glxgears frame rate on Nvidia Geforce2 and Mandrake 10

hi all

I have a problem with low frame rates for glxgears (as a standard test) on my Nvidia Geforce2 MX and Mandrake 10.0.. I have installed the latest Nvidia Drivers from the Nvidia site... i know it is installed coz when i try to upgrade using nvidia-installer i get latest version already installed.. and Nvidia splash screen comes on boot... i edited my XF86Config-4 file... it already had the <Load "glx"> and 'nv' was replaced with 'nvidia' ...

However when i try to test my frame rate using glxgears i get in the range of about 380 fps... according to the cedega installation notes i should get at least 500 fps with the 3D acceleration turned on.. and i know i should because this is the second time i installed Mandrake 10 on this box (screwed up the 1st installation royally) and the first time i had frame rates above 2000 fps for glx gears...

the cedega install notes say check 3D setup... but i have done everything i know and still the fps are not forthcoming... the fps drop is quite apparent especially in UT2004... compared to the first time i had mdk 10...

i know i am missing something... can anybody help pls...

thanks..

change the following in your xf86config:
.......
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 16

Subsection "Display"
......
and then reboot your x

failing that: try a dififenrent x server (x.org)

on xorg 6.7 on slack 10 i have the exact same card (nvidia gf2 mx400 - 64mb ddr) and i get 512fps on 24bit mode ??

thanks for your reply...first of all... my card is Geforce2 MX 200 with 32mb ram... so that might explain the low fps... but changing to 16 bit colour didnt work... there was no improvement either

but then you are also getting 512 fps on your card... thats kinda wierd coz i am pretty sure i managed 2000 fps the first time i installed mdk... i remember coz i was quite elated when i saw it output 2000fps... never thought that fps was remotely possible on my card... either that or i had the wrong kind of mushrooms for dinner that night but still i do notice a drop in fps during gaming....

it would help me now if you or anybody else could confirm that my card is configured and running the way it should... at least that would be slightly... very slightly relieving...

i will look around for x.org for mdk and see what i can do about that... or maybe try compiling and installing the driver from source... do you think that would make a difference?? depending on whether its already configured as it should be of course...

any further suggestions always welcome....

hi

after a reboot (not just restarting x) glxgears gave me a frame rate of 756!! just by changing to 16 bit... all the fonts are smaller though... got to fix that now :-|
