linux box very slow especially on upgrading


A raid1 ASUS H81M-K on my lan, now used for backup, has become slow on starting and extremely slow on upgrading

Run memtest to see if it is OK and showing what you expect.
Run SMART diags.

Thanks, I'll do that.
That issue lasted from some weeks although there was no problem of disk space. Now, the last massive upgrading, leading to the situation that I have reported, has set everything in order (I had posted before restarting). Does that point to a software problem having slowed down the box?

In some cases the amount of files on update can cause this by clogging the drive.
If that happens to me I try to only select some and go and then some and go.

What does cat /proc/mdstat have to say? Is md1 repeatedly resyncing?

Are you running these lethargic operations within X while doing other things? I would expect that i3-4160's IGP to work better than that ancient GeForce. I'm running almost the same setup here, except the OS is on SSD and only data is on rusty RAID:
