Iomega rev Drive and 'mt' command ( not working )

First things first:

This is an Iomega Rev drive 70gb ( revdrive70-usb ).
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.

Output lsusb:
Code:
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 059b:0044 Iomega Corp.
Output lsscsi:
Code:
[4:0:0:0] cd/dvd Iomega RRD2 P084 /dev/scd2
I can do this:
Code:
tar -cvf /dev/scd2 /var/log
I can do this:
Code:
tar -tf /dev/scd2
But when I do this:
Code:
mt -f /dev/scd2 rewind
I get:
Code:
/dev/scd2: Invalid argument
I've used this very device on RHEL with no problems.
I've installed the mt packages ( I think ).

I do not see it listed in either /etc/mtab nor /etc/fstab.

Any ideas?

Bub

The REV is not a tape drive which is why mt is failing. Since it is USB device and recognized as a CD drive I would assume that udev will automatically create a device ID which is why its not in your fstab file. I do not see any problems.

Its a hard drive which means its random access and therefore no need to rewind etc. One might look at them like a CDRW or DVDRW drive. Typically they are formatted with a UDF filesystem and can be mounted like any other drive. I've never had the opportunity to play with one but there really is no reason why you can not directly write to it as you posted. How was the device used before? I would try manually mounting the drive.

Tried as you suggested:
Code:
mount -t udf /dev/scd2 /tape/
Output:
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
from
Code:
dmesg | tail

Code:
[ 50.380770] mtrr: type mismatch for d0000000,4000000 old: write-back new: write-combining
[ 50.491318] mtrr: type mismatch for d4000000,4000000 old: write-back new: write-combining
[ 82.383650] EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
[10746.690754] UDF-fs: No VRS found
Also tried just plain:
Code:
mount /dev/scd2 /tape/
Output:
Code:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
Thanks ~

Bub

Do you have any idea if or how the disk was formatted?

Not sure. I look around on the net. I've never formatted it though.

It's been awhile since I've used this, but I could've sworn I was able to
use it just like a regular tape drive with mt.

It won't show me earlier files than the last without mt.

Ahem - eh - well ~

First off; I should've tried a different cartridge. The one I had in the drive was either corrupt or formatted. New cartridge and now it works perfectly. I did not need to "do anything" to get it to work.

Second; These are not treated like a tape drive. Where I got the idea I do not know.
My apologies for the tremendous stupidity exercised by myself.

If you are running a newer Linux distro I would imagine it'll run "out-o'-the-box".
I'm running Ubu 9.10 and it "just works". Looks like a CD-ROM until you put a cartridge in the drive, after which it'll show up as a CD labeled REV70.

Enjoy the pie in my face and your Rev drive if you have one. Don't worry about the old
'mt' command as you'll not be needing it.

Thanks for your patience!

Bub

Thanks for posting back that you got it working.
