i just bought a compaq presario x1000 series that comes with an ATI mobility radeon 9200 video card. it really sucks that there is no driver (to my knowledge) for this video card. some stuff is not displaying very neatly and i hate this.
im the kind of guy whos always trying to convince everyone of switching to linux and i hate everybody saying to me "see??, if you had stayed with winxp you wouldnt have all this problems".
i would like to know what people in similar situations has done, or if somebody has gotten this to work, or if you have any ideas on what i could do.
The Radeon 9200 is right on the line between the DRI from sourceforge and the official ATI drivers.
I believe that http://dri.sourceforge.net/ has Radeon drivers for up to the 9200s, and then ATI has drivers for the rest. Unfortunately, ATI is still weasling out of providing drivers for the Radeon mobility, but you might try the desktop drivers if you're desperate.
Note: These drivers are for 3D acceleration, 2D should be supported right through X.
i downloaded the dri and tried to install, here's the output
---------------------------
The script will now compile the DRM kernel modules for your machine.
Press ENTER to continue or CTRL-C to exit.
Compiling...
ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile
The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules.
Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on
what went wrong.
-----------------------------
i had done it in a konsole window, but i tried in init 1 and it gave me the exact same output
the kernel sources are (i think) properly installed, as it says right there, my kernel is 2.4.21-0.13mdk which should be supported
