Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Just wish to point out that dd is not a drive checking tool, it is a copy and convert utility.

Yes it can be used to copy all ones or zeros in bulk to a drive to maybe help reset locations, but it's not going to tell you anything as output about the drive. And you have to understand what you're doing when you use it.

Probably best to just try another drive.

The question though is whether the hardware is acting in it's design parameters or not.

If a verified hard disk doesn't work with Linux but DOES work with windows on his gear then he might simply have a device that contains some new disk chipset that he can file a bug on and a developer can look into.

If it works with Linux on his gear then his original disk has a problem.

If neither windows or Linux work then maybe some other part is bad.

Just an update, I've bought a new laptop, an hp pavilion and everything is working fine. My dad decided to adopt the computer that was having this issue and he did a complete wipe on the hard drive. He hasn't been able to get a distro that he wants on it yet but when he does we'll see if it has any issues with corruption.
