Fedora Core 4 resolution

i just installed fc4 onto my hp zv5120us laptop with ati mobility 9000 radeon and then installed ATI drivers for it. i then tried to update the resolution to 1280x800 from the default 800x600, but when I do the screen becomes cut into various boxes, and the buttons become corrupt and my mouse is active in more than one areas of the screen, in each respective box. What can I do?

try setting different modes like
1280x720;1280x768;1280x960;1280x1024
it might be that your screen doesn't support that resolution
