I need to know if anyone has successfully gotten sound to work using the EVGA-GeForce GT 520 video card connected with HDMI to an hd tv on any flavor of linux on any desktop.
It matters not what flavor of linux you used. I just want to know if it works for someone. If so I'll give it another shot but for now I don't think the sound is working in Linux for this card. I would ask nvidia's forums/support but they are down for maintenance.
Basically I was trying to set up a machine to use MythTv and I was hoping to use HDMI to play back video I recorded. I never got to the MythTv set up because I can't get sound even though the video works great.
I maxed out all of the volumes unmuted everything (including on the tv), tried random suggestions from the web, made sure I had the latest alsa, and finally I gave up. Unless I hook up external speakers I'm not going to get sound. BTW - everything seemed to be set up correctly. The video card and sound was being detected properly.
At this point I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 (gasp) on this machine and using Media Player (gasp) for the DVR features. I hear it works fairly well. However, I'm a geek and I want to use MythTv in Linux.
Wow that is something I haven't tried. Unfortunately I didn't get much help from the hda analyzer. I thought someone else might benefit from this so here is the link:
Mostly I just want to know if this card works for someone in Linux. If nobody says it works I'm going to report a problem to nvidia and/or alsa. In the meantime I am buying external speakers which sucks but it's the best I can do. Next time I'll have a little patience before buying the first cheap video card I see I know it's better to check the HCL before buying hardware for Linux. It sure saves a lot of grief.

That's why I suggested it. I have an AMD hda_intel and have fixed things once with those scripts (I turned everything to half volume and enabled everything; then I eliminated noise by trial & error, usually by reducing a volume.
Now I have updated (1 year ago) and can't get mic input. The hda intel looks like some vast jig-saw puzzle with all the parts interconnected :-/.
At the moment I'm not ready to install mythTV all of my issues are happening outside of it. From experience I know that it's easier to isolate things before trying to get them to work in a more complicated environment. I have the latest Fedora 17 but I am not tied to it. I try out all kinds of distros all the time. I am using the proprietary nVidia drivers rather than the open source.
In another forum I posted the same question and someone said they got the card working by getting the latest on nVidia. I thought I had already done that when I installed the card but I realized I didn't because the video was working. I think I will give that a shot and then I will laugh at myself for not doing it because it solves most issues I run into.
And here I thought I had updated everything. Duh. I am also going to try the HDMI cable on my other TV hooked to my boxee since I haven't tried that. When I try the update later today I will post a response and hopefully mark this as solved. If not I will post details about my system so I can start debugging.
Thanks for the response!

Eureka it works!!! I needed to update my nvidia drivers. Apparently I hadn't done an update in a while and thought I had. I have no concept of time. Duh.
What I actually did was take the time to do a fresh install on a new bigger and shinier hard drive. I updated fedora then installed nvidia. Initially it didn't work so I had to do this:
