Unhappy ESS1897 sound drivers in RH8

Can somebody please tell me how to get my ESS1897 sound card to work with RedHat 8? I get the following error upon authenticating to KDE :

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)

Thanks in advance for any help.

When I run sndconfig, I get error that command not found. I ran the gui version of Sound Card Configuration, I'm told that there is no soundcard detected. There is definately a sound device in this laptop, as it works in Windoze. It is the ESS1897 series. What else can I try?

I am not sure about the gui, maybe it needs /dev/dsp to already be there

sndconfig will put the devices in /dev needed to have working sound

you just need to install it if you don't have it

I had the same problem with rh8 on my laptop and sndconfig solved it

/sbin/sndconfig is available in rh8

if it was installed and you didn't find it, perhaps it's because you sued by typing su and not su - (which will give you the environment of the root user)
