Attempts to mount any of these devices, sda1, sdb1, sda15, etc, all yield the same error message "not a valid block device"
To repeat: my fstab has a line which seems to indicate that /proc/bus/usb/ is the proper path to use. And, indeed, when i specify that as the mount path to digiKam, it seems to be happy. The lcd on the camera indicates it is on, and a number of photos present, but digiKam can find no images to download.

The suggestions to use dmesg | tail and mount the camera as a scsi drive are similar to what worked for me.
I use a FujiFinePix. (I was lucky to find a webpage specifically about that brand, but I'm too new here to post the link.) I got it to mount with the following line:
