Ive had MS and Kensington usb mice running under slack 9 and 10 with no such freezing. Theres many things that could be the culprit. As ringwraith suggested, Fix up your xorg.conf and make sure the settings are correct for the mouse your using. If thats not it you might try another mouse to try and isolate the problem, if it persists smash your fist onto the mouse and go buy another one. Ive done that with a couple printers and it sure does feel good.
