OK, I have this new AOpen DVD burner and I just can't get it to work right. I'm running kernel version 2.6.12.5. It will burn CD's fine, but it will fail when trying to burn a DVD or download data from a DVD using mkisofs. Here's the error when trying to burn an image to a DVD:
Code:
2417950720/4278564864 (56.5%) @0.2x, remaining 43:07
:-[ WRITE@LBA=120420h failed with SK=3h/ASC=0Ch/ACQ=00h]: Input/output
error
builtin_dd: 1180704*2KB out @ average 0.5x1385KBps
:-( write failed: Input/output error
/dev/hdc: flushing cache
It got to 56.5% percent complete that time, and the time before it only got to 10%. The output of dmesg tells me nothing here. Now, after that failed I tried loading DKII with Cedega, and it was checking to see if I had the key CD-ROM in the drive...it failed and dmesg gave this:
Sorry, I know that's a bit long, but I wanted to make sure you guys could see it all. Once this happens, the drive is pretty much useless until I restart. Can anyone help me here? Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Oh, and might I add, that before the drive fails when trying to use mkisofs (to read) or growisofs (to burn), I can mount CD's and DVD's with it perfectly.
That looks very odd. If I were you, I would exchange the burner for a new one. Maybe try a different kind. I have never seen that on Linux using multiple different DVD Burners, dual and single layer.
Believe it or not, it's not all that rare. I've searched plenty, and a whole lot of people have problems similar to this...but no one ever finds a solution...
No I haven't...but I still do have Win2k installed on the slave drive, so maybe I could try it out there.
Oh, and another update: I cracked the case to make sure that the cable was seated properly and that I was using a new ATA 133 cable..and yes to both. I disconnected the slave DVD-ROM completely and restarted. Now the light on the burner just keeps blinking, and I get all the same errors, and all I did was try to mount a CD. Maybe it has something to do with there being a CD in the drive when I started up? I don't see how that would hurt though...
It is weird as you said, it should not hurt to start with a cd on the device, try to use ti with windows and see hoy it works if not, then you should return it
Another update....I'm an idiot . The reason why the light was blinking and I couldn't mount a CD or anything is because there were two discs in the drive! Geeze... But there was certainly just the blank DVD in there when I was attempting to burn, and no luck. There was also only one DVD in there when I was using mkisofs. So, I will try a dry run with growisofs with that slave drive disconnected still and see how that works. If that does OK, I'll run it again with the laser turned on. And if that works OK, I'll attempt to use mkisofs again and see if it gives me more errors. I have to leave for work shortly, though, so I'll post later on today.
Just as I suspected, disconnecting the slave drive did no good whatsoever. It won't even let me try a dry run with growisofs, it prints the first line and then just goes back to a prompt. With the laser on, it got to about 50%. I guess I'll have to boot into Windows and try it there.
That's a negative for Windows. Got an I/O error when trying to rip a DVD there as well. Guess the drive's trash. But I did learn that I can't burn those DVD anyways, because of the 2 layers they have...not quite sure what that means.
