Black screen after Grub selection(softlock)

I have an ATI Radon 5450 and recently I have gotten an annoying problem. Sometimes when I boot I get a black screen on both monitors. I was able to boot single user mode with a serial cable(after a long wait) and saw a stack dump in dmesg right after the kernel tries to load the open source "Radon" driver. Anyone know how to fix this? My kernel is "4.12.14-200.fc25.x86_64". I am running fedora core 25 which is what the "fc25" means in my kernel version.

I had a boot-to-blank-screen problem myself under Ubuntu after a routine software update that installed a modified nVidia display driver. It's probably a long shot that my experience is relevant to your problem, but since no one else has replied to your post, you might browse my blog entry at

My admittedly drastic solution was to install Debian and overwrite Ubuntu altogether.

I have had this fedora installation since Fedora 14 and I don't feel like replacing it now. I do have my home partition on a separate drive so I could do that if I had too. My current workaround is to keep rebooting till it works. I think this is a kernel bug so maybe if I wait it will go away in a kernel update. I can't seem to get the proprietary ATI drivers to install but that might fix things. When I try and says I need another version of Xorg and I don't want to try that since it has more of a chance of breaking things worse then they are.

Oh, I know this has something to do with detecting monitors since when I turn that off(can't remember the command) I boot consistently but X-windows does not start.

The problem went away after an update.
