ATI Radeon 9800 and mesa

I installed the ati drivers for linux using a guide I found and everything worked fine and fglrxinfo reported the correct information so I went ahead and tried to install xgl and it installed fine. After I rebooted into the xgl session everything was slow so I rebooted into the regular session and did fglrxinfo again but this time it went back to this:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1)

it was working fine but now its messed up again, I tried to reinstall the drivers but it still comes up like this. I checked the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and everything was fine (meaning the 'ati' was replaced by fglrx) in the driver section

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: here's my xorg.conf

Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
