asus A7V8X and NVIDIA drivers...blank screen + freeze

I've already posted this into the general forum, but it may suit better here; sorry for this.
(I spent my wole afternoon recompiling different kernels with no sucess.)

Hi there, I recently bought an Asus A7V8X with VT8235 and KT400; I run a slack9 with at first the out of the box 2.4.20 kernel... worked fine with the nv drivers.... (no glx....)

I then installed the latest nvidia drivers and when I typed startx, I just had a blank screen and nothing happenned. I couldnt ctrl+alt+backsp nor soft reboot...

After a few workaround, I installed 2.4.20-pre7 kernel... recompiled it....put the nvidia drivers...same thing; has a quick look in XFree logs, no error msgs :/ here are my dmesg and a few copy/past from the console...

If anyone has the most insignificant idea, please make me know

cheers

For my A7V8X, I had to turn off NvAGP:
Option "NvAGP" "0"

This is because I have an 8X graphics card. If you don't have an 8X card, you may be able to use the NvAGP, but with it, you can't for right now.

Starting X with AGP 8x video cards on systems with KT400 AGP
chipsets cause system hangs.
Solution: this problem can be worked around by disabling AGP
(Option "NvAGP" "0") in your XF86Config file.

Alternatively, you may be able to enable AGP 8x on your KT400 based system by overriding the default NVreg_EnableAGPSBA registry key.
To do this you can either:

- set the value on the modprobe command line;
for example:
modprobe nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1
- add an options line to your module configuration file,
usually /etc/modules.conf; for example:
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1
and use NVIDIA's AGP (Option "NvAGP" "1" in the Screen section of your XF86Config file).

and if you resort to adding them lines to your modules.conf file then make sure they are on the same line as if they are not whatever one you specify first will be the only one initialized...
so if you do put them on the same line you will see an output such as:
cat /driver/nvidia/agp/status

Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Enabled

well if thats all good and you don't have an nvidia card, why don't you start a thread with your problem, cause these fixes don't have not a thing in the world related to your card.
