Will 2D modesetting with Radeon driver eliminate DRI, what is the impact

Hi, I would like to know.. I have Radeon HD 3870, which is limited to 2D purposes I understand...

Will this mean that I cannot use DRI? Will it have a performance impact in 2D applications?

Does DRI make watching movies on PC 'better'? Especially 720p ones...

Thanks

I'm not sure where you heard that the HD3870 is limited to 2D. That is completely incorrect. Both the open source Mesa drivers, and the proprietary drivers from AMD support 2D and 3D acceleration on that GPU. KMS (kernel modesetting) is available with the open source drivers on new enough kernels.

And, yes, DRI provides 2D and 3D acceleration, so it definitely makes watching movies better.

I heard it from this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

Quote:
2D modesetting only

HD 3xxx / R600 based cards
HD 4xxx / R700 based cards

Ubuntu 9.10 does not support 3D with the Radeon driver. There's still the proprietary driver that I mentioned. And Ubuntu 10.04 will support 3D on those GPUs with the radeon driver.
