Well, after slackware had the same problem with the cd drive as so many distros have (it appears to be a problem in the 2.6 kernel with laptops of this class), I went back to good old debian. I currently posting this on debian Sarge running gnome (added some skins and now it looks a lot better). However, as I can't get the sound to work, I would like to ask about SuSE. Isn't it supposed to be the "user friendly" linux? I have read numerous threads on forums about suse users who got my CS4237B soundcard and F5D7010 wireless card to work, but is my system fast enough to run it?
BTW, not to flame any other distros but I'd like to post this:
ubuntu - I tried the live cd and after two hours I had a brown desktop with two bars at the top and bottom, the beginnings of gnome (this is prolly more my laptop than Ubuntu), installed to hd and was ok, but gave up on sound and wireless
Debian - installed and always worked fine with gnome although the default theme it installs with is just plain ugly; got wireless working but only got sound working once (then I crashed it because I'm so smart)
Slackware - couldn't find install disk
Vector - had to use alternate install kernel to get disk; didn't like desktop and couldn't get sound and wireless
Gentoo - couldn't find install disk
Mandr(ake/iva) - couldn't find install disk
Zenwalk - Couldn't find disk
