Don't sell yourself short, Slackware isn't all that difficult. Give it a try. As for Vector, it's based on Slackware. Works real well on a 450 MHz desktop. Might also want to take a look at DSL. Lots of people swear by it.
Debian-based distros are fine, but I second the recommendation of going to a lightweight WM. Fluxbox, icewm, etc run well on laptops with your specs.
If Ubuntu otherwise works for you, try switching WMs instead.
i have an old laptop with P3 550 & 128ram, 6GB hd. i loaded Red Hat 9 ages ago with icewm as a window manager, which only consumes 45mb of ram on boot up. KDE or Gnome took the whole 128 and started to swap immediately. i was a litle lost in the icewm user interface at first but after reading through the help files i managed to tweak the main menu to my own specs. it was a great way to learn more about linux and revitalise what essentially was a computer destined for the scrap heap.
