Distro recommendation for PII-300Mhz laptop

I have an old IBM Thinkpad with a 6Gb hard drive and 192Mb RAM. It was upgraded from 64Mb which it had originally.

I normally use Ubuntu but even that is a little slow on it. Perhaps it's a Gnome thing, I don't know.

I need a distro that has two basic requirements.

1) Something that performs fast enough on a P2 300Mhz to be usable

2) Something where adding the WPA_Supplicant is relatively easy because I only want it for surfing wirelessly.

I have not downloaded it yet, but so far Mepis Lite and XUbuntu top my list based on specs and experience with the bigger brothers of those distros.

I don't think I'm adept enough for Slackware, but I'll take a look at Vector.

Thanks,
Robert

Don't sell yourself short, Slackware isn't all that difficult. Give it a try. As for Vector, it's based on Slackware. Works real well on a 450 MHz desktop. Might also want to take a look at DSL. Lots of people swear by it.

Try a lighter WM

Debian-based distros are fine, but I second the recommendation of going to a lightweight WM. Fluxbox, icewm, etc run well on laptops with your specs.
If Ubuntu otherwise works for you, try switching WMs instead.

Hi

i have an old laptop with P3 550 & 128ram, 6GB hd. i loaded Red Hat 9 ages ago with icewm as a window manager, which only consumes 45mb of ram on boot up. KDE or Gnome took the whole 128 and started to swap immediately. i was a litle lost in the icewm user interface at first but after reading through the help files i managed to tweak the main menu to my own specs. it was a great way to learn more about linux and revitalise what essentially was a computer destined for the scrap heap.
regards
